International peptide raw material orders typically involve one of a small number of standard payment mechanisms, each with different risk allocation between buyer and supplier. Understanding these options helps buyers negotiate appropriate terms, particularly for first orders or larger commercial purchases.

Telegraphic Transfer (T/T)

T/T, a standard bank wire transfer, is the most common payment method for smaller or established-relationship orders. It is typically structured with a deposit paid before production (commonly 30–50%) and the balance paid before or upon shipment. T/T offers limited buyer protection compared to other mechanisms, which is why it is more commonly used once a degree of trust has been established.

Letters of Credit (L/C)

  • A bank-issued guarantee that payment will be made once the supplier presents documents proving shipment per agreed terms
  • Provides stronger buyer protection since payment is conditional on documentary compliance, not simply trust in the supplier
  • More commonly used for larger orders given the administrative cost and complexity of setting up an L/C
  • Requires precise document preparation, since discrepancies between the L/C terms and shipping documents can delay payment

Escrow and Trade Assurance Services

Some B2B platforms and third-party services offer escrow-style arrangements where payment is held until the buyer confirms receipt of goods matching agreed specifications. This can be a useful middle ground for first-time orders with a new supplier, offering more protection than direct T/T without the complexity of a full letter of credit.

Matching Payment Method to Order Risk

For a first order with an unfamiliar supplier, buyers often favor a smaller pilot order paid via T/T with a modest deposit, or an escrow-based arrangement, before committing to larger volumes under simpler payment terms. As the relationship matures and trust is established through consistent performance, terms often shift toward more streamlined arrangements such as net payment terms.

Documentation to Align with Payment Terms

Regardless of payment method, buyers should ensure the underlying purchase order clearly specifies product specifications, acceptance criteria, and remedies for non-conforming shipments, since payment terms alone do not protect against receiving material that fails to meet agreed specifications.
