A well-constructed request for quote (RFQ) is one of the simplest ways to improve the speed and accuracy of pricing received from peptide raw material suppliers, and to make quotes from different suppliers genuinely comparable rather than based on differing assumptions.

Essential Information to Include

  • Exact peptide sequence, including any modifications such as acetylation, amidation, or specific side-chain modifications
  • Required purity level and quantity, stated in consistent units (milligrams, grams, or kilograms)
  • Required documentation package (Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet, and any additional regulatory documents)
  • Target delivery timeline and preferred shipping terms (Incoterm)
  • Intended application or end use, which helps the supplier recommend the appropriate product grade

Why Precision in the RFQ Matters
Vague or incomplete RFQs often result in quotes based on different underlying assumptions between suppliers, making it difficult to fairly compare pricing; a supplier quoting for 95% purity cannot be meaningfully compared against one quoting 98% purity without recognizing the difference is a major driver of price variation.

Requesting Tiered Pricing
Including a request for pricing at multiple quantity tiers in a single RFQ (rather than submitting separate RFQs for each potential order size) is an efficient way to understand a supplier’s volume discount structure and support future ordering decisions without repeating the full RFQ process.

Setting a Reasonable Response Timeline
Standard catalog products can often be quoted within a day or two, while custom synthesis quotes, particularly for complex sequences, may reasonably take a week or more as the supplier assesses synthesis feasibility; setting an unrealistic response deadline can result in a rushed, less accurate quote.

Using RFQ Responses to Evaluate Suppliers Beyond Price
An RFQ process also provides useful signal about a supplier’s technical competence and responsiveness — a thoughtful, detailed quote response that asks clarifying questions about a genuinely ambiguous specification often indicates a more technically capable partner than a fast but generic response that ignores important details in the request.
